My Top 10 "Most Memorable Moments" From Presidential Debates
"They're eating the cats!" crashes the top 10
LOL for reasons that you may guess, this week got me to thinking about memorable moments in presidential debates. Over the last three days, as the thoughts have marinated, I’ve compiled a list. Not surprisingly, “They’re eating the cats!” makes the list and with each passing day it’s climbed higher toward number 1.
#10: Gerald Ford’s “No Soviet Domination of Eastern Europe” (1976)
#9: “Binders Full of Women” – Mitt Romney (2012)
#8: Al Gore’s Sighing and Looming (2000)
#7: George H.W. Bush Checks His Watch (1992)
#6: Trump Stalks Hillary (2016)
#5: “You’re No Jack Kennedy” – Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle (1988)
#4: Nixon’s Sweaty Appearance (1960)
#3: “I Won’t Exploit My Opponent’s Youth and Inexperience” – Ronald Reagan (1984).
#2: “There You Go Again” – Ronald Reagan (1980)
#1: “They’re Eating the Cats!” – Donald Trump (2024)
I know some will argue that it’s too early to give “They’re eating the cats!” the coveted number one spot, but as the days have gone by and the furor has expanded, and the memes just keep coming and coming, ti’s just wormed its way up to number 1. Its sheer outlandishness, coupled with the strangely rhythmic cadence that Trump used when delivering the full soundbite, plus the overall crazed nature of his performance, elevates it to an instant number 1. Long after I’m dead and gone, this one will be remembered.
