Dems File Suit Against GOP Backed Georgia Election Rules
The move will likely be the first of many challenges to GOP-backed changes since 2020
The Democratic Party of Georgia has filed a lawsuit against the state’s newly imposed GOP-backed election rules. The suit seeks to block two recent rules adopted by the State Election Board that empowered county officials to refuse to certify an election. This lawsuit represents a important first step in combating dozens of similar moves by the GOP across the country to achieve partisan influence over vote counting and certification.
The new Georgia rules seek to place political operatives in positions where they can influence the outcome of vote counting and certification. The Democrats’ swift legal action seeks to protect the integrity of our elections.
The lawsuit includes the claim that the new law allows the board to “hunt for purported election irregularities of any kind, potentially delaying certification and displacing longstanding (and court-supervised) processes for addressing fraud.”
Board members and republican officials have attempted to downplay the potential for chaos, but the lawsuit counters: “These novel requirements introduce substantial uncertainty in the postelection process and — if interpreted as their drafters have suggested — invite chaos by establishing new processes at odds with existing statutory duties,”
This is a good indication that the robust legal apparatus that the dems have put in place is ready to move quickly and proactively to protect the integrity of not only the voting process - but the vote counting and certification process. So far so good. This is an area that bears close watching.
